The Crying Baby says, “Aaaaaaa!”
Beginning Reader Lesson Design
Rationale: The purpose of this lesson is to help students recognize the short vowel correspondence a=/a/. Children will learn how to recognize, spell, and read words with the short a sound. They will learn to recognize the sound in words, we will practice spelling using letterboxes, students will practice writing the words, then we will read Pat’s Jam and lastly assess if the have mastered the phoneme.
Materials:

primary writing paper

a picture of the phoneme (crying baby)

white board/ smart board
-
tile letters (for each student)

letter boxes (for each student)

List of words: at, mat, glad, brag, red, zad, quack, stack

Book: Pat’s Jam (for each student and teacher)

Worksheets (for each student)
Procedures:
1. Say introduction: All of the letters that are in our alphabet make a different sound. Sometimes it can be hard to remember the sound that each letter makes. A great way to remember the sounds the letters make, is to watch are mouth when we make the noise and see what it does. The letter we are learning about today is the letter A (show a picture of baby crying). Raise your hand if you remember a time when you heard a baby crying. What sound did the baby make? (demonstrate if no one knows)
Get the class to practice saying /a/. Teach them to do a hand gesture each time they make the noise where they rub their eyes like a baby crying.
2. Say: Grab a partner and face each other. One at a time, practice making the /a/ sound. Watch your partner’s mouth and see what is does. When your partner makes the sound, their mouth opens, their jaw and tongue drop and they make the sound.
3. Say: We are going to practice finding the /a/ sound in a few words when they are said out loud. I will demonstrate the first word: mat. I am going to say the word really low and when I hear the /a/ sound I am going to make the hand gesture we learned earlier:
mmm-aaa-tttt mmmm-aaa-ttt. I hear it in the middle, m-aaaa-t (make the hand gesture). Now I am going to show some words and we are going to do it as a class. (write words with /a/ in them on the board and have the class make the hand gesture when they hear /a/).
4. Say: Now what if we wanted to spell the word smash? “I there is a bug on the floor we need to smash.” Smash means to break into pieces. Everyone get out your letter boxes on you desk. I am going to demonstrate how to spell smash and I want you to do it with me. First, let’s see how many phonemes are in the word smash. (show on the board /s//m//a//sh/. We need four boxes. Sssmash. What is the first sound I hear? S! s goes in the first box. Smmmash. M! m goes in the second box. Smaaaash. I hear /a/! A goes in the third box. Smasshhh. I hear a sh sound! Sh goes in the last box. Now you try with the word bad. Try with the word sat. (Do this with all the words on your word list).
5. Say: once you have spelled the words correctly, I want you to write them on your paper. Pass out primary paper to the class.
6. Call on students to answer and tell how they knew: Do you hear /a/ in pet or pat? Quack or quick? Glide or glad?
When you hear /a/ making a crying motion with your hands like we practiced: Matt, loved, to, pat, his, cat, Jim, at, night.
7. Say: Now we're are going to read a book called Pat’s Jam. Pat and Jam are two hungry rats. They decide to go to the grocery store to get some ham but when they get in the car they have no gas! What are they going to do? Let’s read the book to out neighbor and see what happened. (walk around and observe what is going on). Walk around and ask students questions about the plot.
8. Assessment: I will listen to each student read part of the book and take note of miscues. While working individually with each student, the rest of the class will work on the worksheets and turn it in to me.
